About this book
John’s Gospel is one of the four Gospels. ‘Gospel’ means ‘good news’. The Gospels are the books that tell us about Jesus’ life on earth. John was one of the three *disciples who knew the *Lord Jesus Christ best. John called himself ‘the *disciple that Jesus loved’. We think that John wrote his Gospel in the city called Ephesus. He wrote it some years after Matthew, Mark and Luke wrote their Gospels. He wrote it about 70 years after Christ’s birth.
John’s Gospel is different from the other three Gospels. It does not describe many things that the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke do describe. But it does include many things that are not in the other Gospels. John tells us much more about who Jesus was. John shows us Jesus as the Son of God – the only person who can cause us to live. John teaches us more about God’s Spirit, too.
At the beginning of his Gospel, John calls Jesus ‘the Word’.
Chapter 1
The Word became human
v1 In the beginning, the Word was already there. The Word was with God. The Word was God. v2 He was with God in the beginning. v3 God made all things by the Word. God did not make anything without him. v4 It is the Word who causes us to live. And because of this, he was the light to all people. v5 The light shines in the dark, and the dark cannot put out the light.
v6 God sent a man. His name was John. v7 He came to tell people about the light. God wanted everyone to believe what John said. v8 John himself was not that light. God sent him to tell people about the light. v9 The true light, that gives light to every person, was coming into the world.
Verses 4-9 The Word (Jesus Christ) is like light. He shows us what is true. The dark means the *power of God’s enemy, *Satan. He tries to hide what is true. God’s light shines in the dark. *Satan’s *power cannot put it out. Jesus said that he himself was the light of the world (John 8:12; 9:5). In verse 6, ‘John’ is not the man who is writing this book.
